Disciplinary proceedings conducted by the University are subject to FERPA. Information in retained files may be reported to third-parties with the express written permission of the student, in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA").
There are several important exceptions to FERPA that will allow the University to release information to third parties without a student’s consent. For example, the release of student disciplinary records is permitted without prior student consent to University officials with a legitimate educational interest, such as a student’s academic advisor and/or to Columbia Athletics if the student is an athlete. A legitimate educational request may include, but is not limited to: honors, prizes, and/or fellowships.
